Overview

Blurring the line between document and artistic expression is very often the focus of   Malta based photographer Alex Attard. Driven by curiosity, he observes, filters and analyses absence and presence and tends to record the overlooked performance. His aesthetic varies from the stark and minimal to quasi abstract and prefers to develop his work in series in an attempt to scrutinise and explore a subject as extensively as possible.

He has had various solo exhibitions one of which, ‘Parallel Existences’, has been published in book form and awarded the ‘Best Book Production’ by the National Book Council.  His work has been featured in several high-end shows and projects, including participation in the, 2019 Ostrale Contemporary Art Biennale in Germany, the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale with Architecture Project, with whom he also collaborated on a group exhibition in Paris, titled Reasonable Dreams and the 2015 Mdina Contemporary Art Biennale.

Biography

ALEX ATTARD’s practice blurs the line between documentation and artistic expression. Following a process of research and analysis, his photographs tap into what he calls the overlooked performance and the less observed aspects of the world around us. With a focus on the natural and urban environment as well as performative space, he works in series to compose compelling visual narratives that curate reality.

Attard has exhibited his work in several solo shows, Out of Now, Il-Kamra ta’ Fuq, 2021; Parallel Existences, Valletta Contemporary, 2018; A Wandering Eye, Spazju Kreattiv, 2017; and The Overlooked Performance, St James Cavalier, 2015.

His work has been published widely. In 2018 his monograph Parallel Existences in collaboration with the Notarial Archives Foundation was awarded the Malta National Book Prize for the Best Book Production and in 2023 was shortlisted and awarded an Honorable Mention at the International Photography Awards in the Fine Art Books category. In 2023 he published his second B&W monograph, ‘Exposure – Fragmented Sculptures of an Island Coast’, a unique journey around the Maltese coast. He has collaborated with various professionals and institutions including a series of photographic essays for the book Palazzo de La Salle, Genesis and Evolution, in association with the Malta Society of Arts, 2023.

Attard’s work has been featured in various collective shows, the latest being the 18th Venice Biennale of Architecture 2023 through Demicoli & Associates’ participation as part of the Time Space Existence experience, as well as the -Isms, Ostrale Contemporary Art Biennale, Dresden, 2019; Cabinet of Curiosities (with AP Valletta) in the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale, 2016; The Medina Contemporary Art Biennale in 2015 and Reasonable Dreams, La Galerie d’ Architecture, Paris, 2013.

Attard’s commercial architecture photography has been published in international art and design magazines such as Archdaily, Dezeen, iGNAT, Arch20 and he has also received numerous awards for his photography. In 2019 he was accepted as a nominee for the prestigious Prix Pictet Global Photography Award.

A selection of Attard’s works form part of the National Art Collection of Malta and Fondazjoni Kreattivita, Malta’s National Centre for Creativity.
